Update: The tutorial below still works just fine, but I've since written a better illustrated one for making tissue paper flowers and pom pom garland here.
...
They're a far cry from the beautiful creations by these local artisans, but Bo and I made some tissue paper flowers today.
My sister and I used to make these when we were little. We'd use a whole box of Kleenex and spray them with perfume (I'm sure my mom was thrilled).
Bo and I used the other kind of tissue paper instead (the stuff you cram into a gift bag when you stop at Target on your way to a birthday party to buy the gift and the wrappings all at once).
Everyone and their brother probably knows how to do this already, but here are instructions just in case:
-Cut tissue paper into several same-size squares. No need to be this guy about it. Rough edges are fine. Eight or so squares are plenty.
-Lay the pieces atop one another, then fold them like an accordion (see middle photo).
-Wrap something around the middle of the accordion, like scotch tape or yarn. Then wrap a green pipe cleaner around it, too, to create a stem.
-Now gently pull each layer of tissue paper toward the center, sort of fluffing as you go. There are more complicated ways to do this, but that's the crafting-with-kids version.
There she be! A crunchy, scrunchy flower that somewhat resembles a carnation or peony. Bo has had some pink ones hanging in her room for several months, but the flowers we made today will be decorations for her rainbow-themed birthday party.
You seriously flooded me with so many wonderful memories of being small....my sister and I scented them up with perfume too.

Isn't parenting the ultimate deja vu experience? Everything I do with the girls seems to just be a reminder of growing up with my sister.
Sorry to read about your boo-boo, Mrs. French. Hope it's healing well.

You made me LOL when I followed your link in the instructions! Can't remember his name, but NOOO!!! Don't want to be him (atleast not in Sleeping with the Enemy).

Hmm ... I'm intrigued, Sharon. Send me an e-mail and we can talk about it. Maybe we could do something through Etsy.
Thanks!
