The quest for the perfect twirly skirt has ended, thanks to a 69-cent pattern I bought at Value Village.
We went through two other versions following other patterns.
"It doesn't twirl right," Bo declared each time, as if it were a toy with dead batteries.
The third try was the charm, though. I made it with brown corduroy (I'm ready for spring, but the weather here isn't cooperating), lined with pink flannel, and hemmed with bias tape I made from brown and red polka dots on a white background (recognize it from the old stash, Klay?).
I'm sorry I don't have the pattern number for you (it's waaaay downstairs and I'm waaaay tired in bed), but it's a little diddy from the 1960s or so, so you might have trouble tracking it down if you wanted to anyway. Plus, it needed some adjusting. Even though I was working with a size 7 pattern for my 4-year-old girl, the waist it instructed me to cut was too tiny for little Bo, who I think still falls around the 10th percentile for weight. Go figure.
In the end, I think the pattern is pretty similar to these instructions for a circle skirt from Indie Tutes (minus the patchwork).
In other happy news, remember the book sling I put on the auction block as a fundraiser for Haiti? It sold! A lovely reader I'll call E in Arkansas (not sure if you're OK with me using your name, E?) contacted me and was excited to buy it. Her $52 payment will go straight to Partners in Health.
And how lovely is her choice of fabric?
It's Nicey Jane Wash Day Ticking in Dandelion by Heather Bailey, and it's on my sewing table ready to be transformed.
Thank you, E! Your little one soon will have a small piece of Haiti within reach at story time.
Finally, a link. Click on a month to see the "looks" they spotted on kids on the street.
I'm not sure how I feel about it. Kind of hilarious. Kind of fun and inspiring--especially from the perspective of someone who sews clothes for her kids. But also a little twisted that the world cares this much about the clothes kids wear? I'm a fan of The Sartorialist, but for kids? Hmmm ...
Any thoughts on that one?
I love the skirt and the fabric choice!
Not sure about sartorialist for kids. I mean, kids should be kids.

As soon as I saw it I said - hey that's familiar :) Funny how you remember things like that. Ok, I really love the Satorialist to but can you explain it to me? Are the people just people or are they models? It's great to look at though, I love the Amsterdam one.
